Our philosophy
Our shop has a simple philosophy: source the best organic produce from as near as possible . . . making food miles better. Jump to Shop price list November 2009.
We are proud to be working with many different organic Scottish producers and processors as well as Green City wholefoods to bring you the widest selection of organic produce in Scotland, with over 1600 lines.
And if we haven't got it, we'll source it for you. Recently we created an organic muesli base from wheat, barley, rye and oatflakes all milled locally.
Having an on-farm butchery and a fifth generation master butcher working here means we can provide a personal service - whether a rack of pork, pigs cheeks, beef strips for stroganoff or mince for your dog.
Some products are wild rather than organic - sustainable fish from Fish Forever, local venison, rabbit and pheasant when available.
Wherever there is a Fairtrade option, we stock it - from coffee and tea to bananas and olive oil.
We offer discounts on cases of your favourite staples and can supply trays of apples in season as well as sacks of flour, cereals or potatoes.
We stock grass-fed Shorthorn beef from our own farm, hung in our on-farm butchery for at least 21 days. Finishing cattle on grass improves the taste and texture of the meat, and leads to much higher levels of Omega-3 beneficial fatty acids.
We also buy in from Carey Coombs who rears pedigree Shorthorn cattle at Dunsyre and David Stoddart at Penicuik who fattens Galloway cattle reared in the Great Glen by Paolo Berardelli.
We supply our own North Country Cheviot lamb, and top up with lambs from Dunsyre as well as our own Blackface mutton reared in the Great Glen.
We rear Tamworth sows with a Duroc boar to produce great pork, bacon and sausages. The pigs spend the summers outside in fields and woods, and the winter in a strawed barn with a verandah and outdoor run. Weaned at 8 weeks, reared in family groups, fed on silage and reject fruit and veg as well as best organic pig food, these pigs get to be
pigs before they get to be pork.
We supply organic free range chickens from Grierson's organic family farm near Perth. They are delivered weekly.
Heritage breed single breasted slow grown turkey - probably the best turkey you will ever taste. The turkey for people who don't like turkey. Free range on clover pastures (and anywhere else they can escape to).
Eggs with attitude - and we top up from Bill Brown's farm in Peebles.
Milk and cream from Clyde Organics, ice cream from Cream O Galloway.
Cheese and yoghurt from Locharthur near Dumfries, cheese from Connage dairy near Inverness and by special request from Godminster in Somerset.
We grow about 30 different vegetables here as well as strawberries and other soft fruit. But we can't grow enough for all our customers so we also buy in from organic farms in Fife and East Lothian. We work with Phantassie to source organic fruit and vegetables which are not grown in Scotland from England and even further south. But we don't do out of
season strawberries.
We also stock organic bread and oatcakes, local honey, home made cakes, some of the best and the most affordable organic and biodynamic wines in the world, chocolate from the Chocolate Tree in East Lothian as well as Montezuma's.
As well as food, we have a great range of organic products for cleaning you and your home without polluting your environment - and some wonderful smelly things including a range of organic goats milk products made specially for us by Carol McMillan. We also stock a range of baby clothes in organic cotton - not just because they are cute but because growing non-organic cotton still often involves children spraying lethal pesticides without protective clothing. Green
books and dry logs also supplied.
Plants for sale from the farm and local nurseries from spring 2010.
